LinkedIn connections

lkin I feel LinkedIn is under-utilized by most people. I’m not sure why. Do you think it’s because a potential user may be under the impression the format is more like Facebook or Twitter? Most of the print I’ve seen about the business networking site has been mentioned in the same breath as the other social media giants with only the “business” distinction.

A good way to describe it is an interactive rolodex. But this particular rolodex allows you access to your friend’s rolodex as well. Sure, there are some great apps, widgets and groups you can take advantage of but the concept of sharing your contacts so easily is the foundation.

Personally, LinkedIn was responsible for my job move in 2007 and I’ve been singing its praises ever since. My friends will back me up on this.  And sometimes they probably wish I’d cool it.   But it’s hard not to say anything when I encounter newly unemployed acquaintances who shrug off the concept.  Recently a friend told me she’s been getting the most bites from jobs she’s applied to on LinkedIn.  If that’s not encouragement I don’t know what is!

There are a few companies who exclusively post openings on the site or list them on LinkedIn first; either way it can be an important advantage in this job market.  The number of new job listings varies by region.  You will have more opportunities in larger metros but word is catching on.

Trust me, if you maintain your connection list and get involved (even on a semi-routine basis) now, it will pay off for you or someone you know in the future.
