Job descriptions in the era of SocMedia

If Social Media has taught us anything it is how important communication is at all levels.  Let me tell you a little story and allow me to vent simultaneously.  We all know the job market is crazy at the moment and it’s an “employer’s market” to boot.  They can shoot for the moon and might just get it with the largest pool of potential employees seen in years.

Nothing wrong with that, but this summer I seem to have connected with more businesses who haven’t taken the time to truly assess their needs.  I recently had an interview with a growing company in a very specialized field.  They’ve been steadily acquiring small companies to add to their portfolio and have about 150 employees.

Now they’ve decided they need a marketing person.

They had a laundry list of tasks their ideal candidate would be responsible for but no plan or goals for that matter.  Having worked with clients implementing new systems I could see the writing on the wall.  Some people want everything done all at once rather than a strategic, methodical action plan.  You don’t make progress by throwing ideas against a wall to see what sticks.

Employers, take the time to assess your needs before you begin the hiring process.  You’ll save everyone time (and yourself, money.)
